After the war, it competed with the Workers' Party (Communist Party) for power, but was weakened by repression. In 1947, it was absorbed into a satellite party of the Communist Party and became the United Peasant Party, Zjednoczone Stronnictwo Ludowe (ZSL). In August 1989, when it received a call for a coalition from Walesa, chairman of the Solidarity trade union, it responded and joined the first Solidarity government.
