Persian Letters (English: Lettres persanes) French

An epistolary novel by Montesquieu, published in 1721. The plot of this novel is quite simple. Tired of the political struggles at the Persian court, Yusbek leaves his homeland with his friend Rika in search of the wisdom of Europe, settling in Paris and exchanging letters with his friends, servants, and mistresses from his homeland. Soon, Yusbek receives a letter informing him of a crisis. Chaos breaks out in his harem, and terror and fear rule the harem at his command, but his mistress Logsane tells him she is honored to have deceived him and drinks poison. Meanwhile, the letters between Yusbek and Rika contain satire of the French customs of the Regency period (1715-23), social criticism, and philosophical reflections on the political system. Of course, this is the author's true intention. The work was a great success because it perfectly suited the times, when society was free from the tyranny of the last years of Louis XIV.

モンテスキューの書簡体小説。1721年刊。この小説の筋はきわめて簡単である。ペルシアの宮廷での政争に疲れたユスベクは友人リカとともにヨーロッパの知恵を求めて故国を離れ、パリに居を構え、そこで故国の友人、召使い、愛妾(あいしょう)たちと手紙を交換する。やがてユスベクは危急を告げる手紙を受け取る。彼の後宮に混乱がおこり、彼の命令で戦慄(せんりつ)と恐怖が後宮を支配するが、愛妾ログザーヌは彼を欺(あざむ)いたことを光栄に思うと彼に告げて、毒杯を仰ぐ。他方、ユスベクとリカの手紙には摂政(せっしょう)時代（1715～23）のフランスの風俗に対する風刺や社会批判、政治制度に関する哲学的省察が述べられる。むろん著者の真の意図はここに存する。この作品が大成功を収めたのは、ルイ14世の晩年の陰惨な専制政治から解放された当時の世相にぴったり合致していたからである。
