Jianghu News - Kouko News

A pro-shogunate newspaper published in Edo in 1868 (Keio 4). It was first published on leap April 3rd in the lunar calendar by Fukuchi Genichiro (Ochi), along with Jono Denpei, Nishida Densuke, Hirooka Kosuke and others. It was a booklet-style newspaper of about a dozen pages folded in half, and was published almost every other day. In addition to reporting on the domestic situation, Fukuchi, a leading intellectual of the time, discussed the political structure of the new government, and so the newspaper was particularly excellent in both content and influence, on a par with Yanagawa Shunsan's Chugai Shimbun. However, Fukuchi had a grudge against the Satsuma and Choshu clans and mocked the government army. In addition, in his "Strength and Weakness Theory" in volume 16, he compared Satsuma and Choshu to the Shogun Ashikaga, Yamana and Hosokawa, which drew the attention of the new government. When the government army entered Edo, he was taken to the police station for questioning, his woodblocks were confiscated, and newspapers were banned. As a result, the "Kangko Shinbun" was discontinued with its 22nd volume on May 22, and all other private newspapers in Edo were also forced to stop publication. Fukuchi became the first newspaper journalist to be involved in a literary scandal.
