Peroxosulfuric acid (English spelling)

Peroxosulfuric acid (English spelling)

There are two types of peroxomonosulfuric acid: H 2 SO 5 , with a formula weight of 114.1, and peroxodisulfuric acid: H 2 S 2 O 8 , with a formula weight of 194.1. The term is usually used to refer to peroxodisulfuric acid.

Both are colorless, hygroscopic crystals, but they dissolve in water and are strong acids, breaking down into sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide. They dissolve in ethanol and ether. In aqueous solutions, they form the ions shown in the data notebook, which are sulfate ions with O 2- replaced by O 2 2- .

It is obtained as a crystal by reacting an aqueous solution of chlorosulfuric acid (HSO 3 Cl) with hydrogen peroxide, removing the hydrogen chloride produced, and cooling the solution. It is usually obtained as an aqueous solution by decomposing potassium peroxosulfate with concentrated sulfuric acid. Pure peroxosulfuric acid is somewhat stable, but impure peroxosulfuric acid is prone to decomposition and is a strong oxidizing agent.
