Act of Settlement

A British law enacted in June 1701. The order of succession to the throne had already been determined in the British Bill of Rights (1689), but because Queen Anne had no male heirs, there was a fear that the throne would pass to the Catholic pretender to the throne, J.F.E. Stuart. This law was enacted to ensure that the British throne would be passed on to the descendants of Sophia, the granddaughter of James I and widow of the Elector of Hanover, after Anne, and to ensure that it would be passed on to Protestants. This law allowed George I to ascend to the throne in 1714, and the Hanoverian dynasty began.

1701年6月制定されたイギリスの法律。イギリスでは先に「権利章典」 (1689) において王位継承順位は定められていたが，アン女王に男系相続人がなかったため，王位は旧教徒の大王位僭称者 J.F.E.スチュアートに移るおそれが生じた。そこでこの法が制定され，アンのあとは，ジェームズ1世の孫でハノーバー選帝侯未亡人ソフィアの子孫にイギリス王位を伝えて，それを新教徒に確保しようとした。この法によって 14年ジョージ1世が即位し，ハノーバー朝が始った。
