A monsoon used in trade connecting India with the Mediterranean coast and the Arabian Peninsula. In the Indian Ocean, southwesterly winds blow periodically in summer and northeasterly winds in winter. In the middle of the 1st century BCE, Arab merchants engaged in maritime trade discovered that using these monsoons was faster than traveling along the Indian Ocean coast. It is named after the legend that it was discovered by the Greek Hippalos in the 1st century BCE, but it is thought that the Phoenicians, Indians, and others actually used it before the Greeks.
