Pirate Coast

…Peilim Island at the entrance to the Red Sea and Socotra Island off the Gulf of Aden were also known as pirate bases, but the Persian Gulf was particularly famous. Entering the gulf from the Strait of Hormuz, the United Arab Emirates is on the Arabian side, and the coastal region was so rampant with Arab pirates that it was called the Pirate Coast. The people living in that area were collectively called Jawasmi, and this became another name for pirates, especially in the coastline about 240 km east to west from Cape Musandam at the northernmost tip of the Oman Peninsula, where it was said that "their livelihood was piracy and their pleasure was murder." …
