1667‐1752 German-born opera composer who was active in England. He moved to London in 1700. In 1710 he founded the Academy of Early Music and gained popularity with his revivals of 16th-century works. He also served as general director of Lincoln's-in-Fields Theatre for many years, for which he composed many masques and arranged music for ballad operas, but his fame continues to this day for The Beggar's Opera (1728), which he collaborated with J.
