German-born opera composer who was active in England. He moved to London in 1700. In 1710 he founded the Academy of Early Music and gained popularity with his revivals of 16th-century works. He also served as general director of Lincoln's-in-Fields Theatre for many years, for which he composed many masques and arranged music for ballad operas, but his fame continues to this day for The Beggar's Opera (1728), which he collaborated with J. ドイツ生れでイギリスで活躍したオペラ作曲家。1700年にロンドンに渡る。10年には古楽アカデミーを創設し，16世紀の作品のリバイバルで人気を集めた。また長らくリンカンズ･イン･フィールズ劇場の総監督を務め，そのために多くのマスク(仮面劇)を作曲したり，バラッド･オペラのための音楽をアレンジしたが，とくにJ.ゲイと協力した《乞食オペラ》(1728)は今日まで彼の名声を伝えている。【荒川恒子】
