Bennettites (English spelling)

Japanese: ベネチテス（英語表記）bennettites

A general term for plants that lived only in the Mesozoic era, belonging to the order Bennettitales of the Cycad order. The shape of the leaves is very similar to those of fossils and modern plants of the order Cycadales, making it difficult to distinguish them from each other just by appearance. The stomata of leaves and other organs of plants belonging to the order Bennettitales only have a pair of synergid cells on the outside of the guard cells, and are completely distinct from Cycadales, which have several synergid cells around the guard cells. Furthermore, the cell walls of each organ of plants belonging to the order Bennettitales are generally highly curved, while those of Cycadales are straight.

中生代に限って生存した植物で，ソテツ綱ベネチテス目Bennettitalesの総称。葉の形は化石や現生のソテツ目に属する植物ときわめてよく似ていて，外見だけでこれらを区別することは困難である。ベネチテス目に属する植物の葉やその他の器官の気孔は，孔辺細胞の外側に1対の助細胞があるだけで，孔辺細胞のまわりに数個の助細胞のあるソテツ目とは完全に区別される。またベネチテス目に属する植物の各器官の細胞壁は一般に著しく屈曲するが，ソテツ目のそれは直線的である。
