Located on the south side of the Arno River in Florence, this museum houses Italian paintings from the 15th to 18th centuries, and is as important in this field as the Uffizi Gallery in the same city. Palazzo Pitti, which had been used as a residence for the Medici and Savoy royal families, was donated to the Italian state by Vittorio Emanuele III in 1919, and houses the Palatine Gallery on the second floor, the Museum of Crafts, which displays 16th and 17th century art objects on the first floor, and the Museum of Modern Art, which displays paintings and sculptures from the 19th century onwards, on the third floor. It is said to have been designed by Alberti, and construction began around 1470, but was soon halted due to the downfall of the client, political businessman Luca Pitti. Later, in 1549, it became the property of the wife of Cosimo de' Medici, Duke of Tuscany, and since then, renovation and expansion work has continued, and in 1839 the north transept was completed, giving it the shape we see today. It is considered one of the masterpieces of the Rustic style palace, made of rough cut stone, and behind it is the Renaissance Boboli Gardens. Most of the collection was owned by the Medici family, and the walls are filled with about 500 works, including 11 works by Raphael, including "Madonna of the Grand Duke," "Madonna of the Chair," and "Portrait of Maddalena Doni," 16 works by Andrea del Sarto, including "Madonna of Albie" and "St. John the Baptist," 14 works by Titian, and 8 works by Tintoretto, just like a gallery of the past.
