An Edo period term referring to shops selling cosmetics such as rouge and face powder. In Kyoto in the 15th century, there were female store stylist benitoki (benitoki) who sold a muddy glossy rouge (tsuyabeni) dissolved in a rouge dish for use as blush. There was also solid rouge for use as lipstick. In the 17th century, benitoki shops were established in Kyoto, Osaka, and Edo, and benitoki wholesalers in Kyoto sold benitoki to Osaka and Edo. In the 18th century, wholesalers were established in Edo and Osaka, and in addition to benitoki made in Kyoto, they also sold their own unique products such as face powder. As makeup styles became centered on lipstick, dried utsushibeni (sarabeni, chokobeni) began to be sold. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
