Red flatworm (Cucujus coccinatus)

Japanese: ベニヒラタムシ(紅扁虫) - ベニヒラタムシ（英語表記）Cucujus coccinatus

An insect of the family Lacertidae in the order Coleoptera. Its flat body is black except for its red upper wings. Its body length is 11-15mm. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu, and inhabits mountainous areas west of the Kanto region. Both adults and larvae live under the bark of dead coniferous and broadleaf trees that has become easily peeled off, and prey on insects. The larvae are flat and yellowish brown. The head is wider than the body, and the end of the body has a tail protrusion (similar to the larvae of the family Lacertidae that live under the bark, but the shape of the tail protrusion is different). The period from egg to adult varies depending on the environment, but is thought to be around two years.

甲虫目ヒラタムシ科の昆虫。扁平な体は赤色の上翅を除いて黒色。体長11～15mm。北海道から九州まで分布し，関東以西では山地に生息する。成虫，幼虫ともに，針葉樹，広葉樹の枯木のはがれ落ちやすくなった樹皮下にすみ，昆虫を捕食する。幼虫は扁平で黄褐色。頭部は胴部よりも幅広く，体の末端は尾突起になっている(樹皮下に生息するアカハネムシ科の幼虫に似るが，尾突起の形態が異なる)。卵から成虫までの期間は環境によって異なるが，2年前後と考えられる。
