Pereyaslav

...A city in the Kievan Rus Oblast in Ukraine. Until 1943 it was called Pereyaslav or Pereyaslavl'. Population 30,200 (1991). The name first appears in the Byzantine-Russian Treaty of 907. In 992 a fortress was built here, and it became an important base for defending the southern border of the Kievan Rus. From the late 11th century it became the capital of the Pereyaslav Principality, but was destroyed by the Mongol army in 1239. From the late 16th century it became one of the centers of the Ukrainian Cossacks. ...
