Theater researcher. Doctor of Literature. Born in Iida, Nagano Prefecture. Maiden name Ichimura. Graduated from the Department of English Literature at Waseda University in 1911 (Meiji 44). At the same time, he completed the Literary Association Drama Research Institute, headed by Tsubouchi Shoyo, and participated in the association's new drama movement. In the same year, through Shoyo's mediation, he became the adopted son of Kawatake Mokuami's eldest daughter, Ito. In 1920 (Taisho 9), he entered the Imperial Theater and became the head of the Arts School. He worked hard to establish the Waseda University Tsubouchi Memorial Theater Museum, and after its opening in 1928 (Showa 3), he became the deputy director and later the director. He also lectured on theater history and other subjects as a professor at Waseda University, and became the head of the Department of Art Studies (Department of Theater) when it was established in 1946 (Showa 21). In 1985, he received the Academy Prize for "The Complete History of Japanese Theater." He was appointed a member of the Japan Art Academy in 1987 and a Person of Cultural Merit in 1987. His major edited works include "Kawatake Mokuami", "Tsubouchi Shoyo" (co-authored), "Studies on Kabuki Authors", "Studies on the History of Kabuki", "Theater Encyclopedia" (6 volumes), and "The Tragedy of Shoyo, Hogetsu, and Sumako".
