The most important daily newspaper in modern China. It was first published in Shanghai on April 30, 1872 by British tea merchant Frederic Major, but was transferred to Chinese hands in 1906. In the early days, it only published government decrees and personnel changes of officials, but gradually began to report on domestic and international political and social events. Its golden age was from 1912 when Shi Liacai (1879-1934) took over management until the mid-1930s, when it was China's number one newspaper with a circulation of 140,000 to 150,000 copies. With the Japanese invasion of China, anti-Japanese sentiment intensified, and in December 1937, the Japanese army occupied Shanghai and the newspaper was closed. It moved to Hankou in 1938 and continued publication. In March, the Hong Kong edition was launched, and in October, the Shanghai edition was revived under an American name, but in May 1949, after the People's Army liberated Shanghai, it was closed again.

近代中国の最有力日刊紙。1872年4月30日、上海(シャンハイ)でイギリスの茶商人メジャーFrederic Majorが創刊したが、1906年中国人の手に譲渡された。初期は政府の布告、役人の人事を掲載するだけだったが、しだいに内外の政治的・社会的事件も報道するようになった。1912年に史量才（1879―1934）が経営を引き受けてから30年代なかばまでが黄金時代で、発行部数14万～15万部、中国第1位の新聞だった。日本の中国侵略とともに抗日論調も激しくなり、1937年12月、日本軍の上海占領で停刊、38年漢口に移って発行を続けた。3月には香港(ホンコン)版を創刊、10月アメリカ人名義で上海版を復活したが、1949年5月、人民軍の上海解放後、ふたたび停刊した。
