China's oldest canal is the Heshui canal, which was opened by the Song dynasty in the Spring and Autumn period from Tao (Dingtao County, Shandong Province) on the bank of the Jishui canal to the southeast, connecting the Jishui and Sishui canals. In the south, the Wu dynasty opened a canal called the Hangou canal from present-day Yangzhou north to the Huai'an city on the bank of the Huai River, connecting the Huai River to the Sishui canal, thus connecting the Yellow River and the Yangtze River (Yangtze River) by water.
