〘名〙 多くの神社を巡拝して祈願すること。二月の初午(はつうま)の日に、稲荷(いなり)の社に巡拝することが多い。また、その人は千社札を持って行ってこれを神社の社殿などにはりつける。中世、花山法皇が美濃国大野郡谷汲(岐阜県揖斐川町)にある天台宗の寺、華厳寺(谷汲観音)に札を納めたことに始まるといわれ、室町時代に流行し、その後すたれたが、江戸時代、安永(一七七二‐八一)のころまた流行して、現代でも行なわれることがある。千社参り。千社。
