Chemical formula: Ag 2 C 2 . Also known as silver acetylide or silver carbide. It is the silver salt of acetylene HC≡CH and consists of Ag + and [C≡C] 2- . It precipitates when acetylene gas is passed through an aqueous solution of silver nitrate in ammonia. Various compositions can be obtained depending on the reaction conditions. It is a white powder that is only slightly soluble in water. It reacts with acids and alkalis to produce acetylene. It is sensitive to light, but is particularly unstable in a dry state and explodes violently when heated or rubbed.
