Guardian of Ouchi - Ouchi Shugo

Japanese: 大内守護 - おおうちしゅご

The position was established in the mid-Heian period as the Konoefu and Hyoefu became ineffective, and was passed down hereditarily to the Minamoto clan after Minamoto no Yorimitsu became Ouchi Shugo. After the Kamakura Shogunate was established, Yoritomo had his vassals serve him as guards, but during the Jokyu War, Yorimasa's grandson Yorishige, who was Ouchi Shugo, was attacked by the Imperial Court's troops and committed suicide. Since then, the name Ouchi Shugo has not been seen, and it is believed to have been abolished.

禁裏を守護する番役。平安時代中期以降，近衛府，兵衛府などの無力化に伴って設置され，源頼光が大内守護となって以来，源氏が世襲した。鎌倉幕府成立後は，頼朝が御家人に結番勤仕させてこれを助けさせたが，承久の乱の際，大内守護であった頼政の孫頼茂が院の軍勢に襲われて自殺。以後大内守護の名は見えず，廃絶したと考えられている。
