Belgian chemist and engineer. Famous for inventing the photographic paper Bedox and the synthetic resin Bakelite. At the age of eight, he was inspired by Benjamin Franklin, who had started out in poverty but had become successful, and developed a pioneering spirit. As he grew up, he entered the field of chemistry, and at the age of 21, he obtained a degree from the University of Gan and began teaching. In 1889, he was invited to do two years of research at an American photographic film and paper manufacturing company. The result of this was the invention of Bedox, a photographic paper that could be used in a darkroom. The profits from its practical application led to the invention of the synthetic resin Bakelite (1908). In 1910, he established a Bakelite manufacturing company in the United States. His predictions about the structure and properties of polymeric substances were proven one after another. His ideal, like those of many scientists of his time, was to realize social progress through the achievements of science. He served as president of the American Chemical Society and later became a professor emeritus at Columbia University.
