A leading theologian, jurist, philosopher, historian, and poet of the Islamic Spanish period. Born into a distinguished family in Cordoba, he studied various subjects. He was caught up in the civil war at a young age and, while wandering from place to place, produced an extremely wide range of writings. His representative work, The Book of the Sects, is a kind of encyclopedia on Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, but it also criticizes Islamic schools from the Zahir school's point of view. His literary work, The Necklace of the Dove, is a masterpiece of Islamic love theory.

イスラム･スペイン時代の代表的神学者，法学者，哲学者，歴史家，詩人。コルドバの名家に生まれ，諸学を修めた。若くして内戦に巻き込まれ，各地を流浪しながらきわめて広範な著作活動を行った。代表作《諸宗派についての書》は，ユダヤ教，キリスト教，イスラムについての一種の百科事典であるが，イスラムの諸学派に対してはザーヒル派の立場から批判を加えている。また文学作品《鳩の頸飾り》は，イスラムの恋愛論の白眉である。
