Depersonalization

Depersonalization

This psychopathological term was first coined by the Frenchman L. Dugas in 1898. It is a sense of loss of vital emotion, but is usually divided into three categories: a sense of unreality, in which the outside world surrounding oneself does not feel real; a sense of emptiness, in which one does not feel certain of one's own existence; and a sense of non-belonging, in which one does not feel that one's body belongs to oneself.

In the 20th century, these three different senses of loss were much discussed from the perspective of abnormal psychology, but gradually attention began to be turned to the overall psychopathology underlying these different abnormal psychology, and attention began to be paid not only to neuroses but also to depersonalization symptoms in the early stages of depression and schizophrenia.
