Japanese: 兵法 - へいほう

A study of combat that developed in ancient China, and examples of this include works such as Sun Tzu, Wu Tzu, and Sima Fa. In Japan, a unique military strategy was established in the early modern period by incorporating ideas from Chinese military strategy, Shintoism, esoteric Buddhism, and Taoism. Although it is unclear what happened up until the end of the Middle Ages, in the early modern period, the content of military strategy was broadly divided into military ceremonies (departure, triumphal return, etc.), military equipment (methods and ceremonies for flags, curtains, armor, etc.), military strategy (strategy, schemes), military law (formation of ranks, weapon combinations, etc.), and military fan (date, direction, sorcery, etc.). Representative military strategists include Obata Kagenori of Koyo Gunkan, Hojo Ujinaga of Shikan Yoho, and Yamaga Soko, a disciple of both. It can also be read as "hyohou," but in this case it usually means swordsmanship.

古代中国で発達した戦闘に関する学問で，『孫子』『呉子』『司馬法』などの書がその代表。日本では，近世の初期に中国の兵法，神道，密教，道教などの思想を取入れて独特の兵法が成立した。中世末期までのことは不詳であるが，近世に入って兵法の内容は軍礼 (出陣，凱旋など) ，軍器 (旗，幕，具足などの製法，製式) ，軍略 (戦略，謀計) ，軍法 (隊伍の組み方，兵器の配合など) ，軍配 (日取り，方角，呪術など) などに大別された。『甲陽軍鑑』の小幡景憲，『士鑑用法』の北条氏長，両者の弟子の山鹿素行などが代表的な兵法家である。なお「ひょうほう」とも読むが，この場合多くは剣法を意味する。
