Inter-American Development Bank

Inter-American Development Bank

Its abbreviation is IDB or IADB. It is an international financial institution established under the Organization of American States (OAS) with the purpose of providing loans to promote the economic and social development of Latin American countries. It was established in 1960. Its headquarters are in Washington.

The bank will play a complementary role to existing lending institutions such as the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) and the Export-Import Bank of the United States, and its main objectives will be (1) to provide development loans to Latin American countries that lack sufficient capital, (2) to guide development plans to bring about balanced economic growth and smooth trade development, and (3) to provide technical assistance in connection with development plans.

Initially, member states were limited to member states of the Organization of American States, but in order to increase fund-raising, non-OAS member countries such as Belgium, West Germany (now Germany), Switzerland, the United Kingdom, France, Austria, and the Netherlands were allowed to join in 1976. As of 2007, there are 47 countries (26 within the region and 21 outside the region). Japan joined in 1976 (Showa 51), the same year as the European countries mentioned above.
