The molten steel produced in various steelmaking furnaces is first poured into a ladle, then poured into a mold (ingot case) and solidified to produce ingots. The ladle has a nozzle at the bottom through which the molten steel flows, and is designed to be able to open and close. There are two methods for pouring molten steel: top pouring, in which it is poured from above the mold, and bottom pouring, in which it is poured from below the mold through a refractory runner. The bottom pouring method is generally used when the quality of the ingot is important. The weight of an ingot is usually 5 to 50 tons for normal carbon steel, but some can weigh over 500 tons.
