A general term for powdered or clay-like refractories used when complex shapes are required. They were developed as an alternative to fireproof mortar. There are castable refractories (alumina cement mixed with chamotte or fireproof lightweight aggregate), plastic refractories (fireproof aggregate mixed with water and a binder such as fireclay), ramming materials (similar to plastic refractories but with less plasticity), and sprayed refractories.
