According to Cheiro (real name Louis Hamon, 1866-1936, known in Japan as Kilo), a palmist of British aristocratic origin, palmistry has been passed down by the Joshi class of people who have lived in this region since ancient times (The Language of Palmistry). It began as a technique called Samudrika, which examines the relationship between wrinkles on a person's entire body and their fortunes, and developed into a technique called Hastrika, as it was believed that the wrinkles on the palm of the hand were deeply related to fortune.
