A general term for insects belonging to the family Scatophagidae in the order Diptera. Adults often appear from spring to early summer. A representative species, the small dung fly Scatophaga stercoraria (illustration), is commonly found on livestock dung on farms and other places. The name dung fly is derived from this. It is closely related to the Anthomyiidae and Muscidae families and is widely distributed from the temperate to frigid zones of the Northern Hemisphere. There are about 150 species recorded in both the Nearctic and Palaearctic regions, but they have hardly been studied in Japan. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
