Genji Uda

Japanese: 宇多源氏 - うだげんじ

This clan descended from the sons of Emperor Uda's four sons, Princes Nariyo, Atsuyoshi, Atsukata, and Atsuzumi. Each was given the surname Minamoto and became a commoner, and was called the Uda-Genji. Among them, the line of Prince Atsumi's sons, Masanobu and Shigenobu, was the most prosperous. Masanobu became the Minister of the Left, and his daughter, Michiko, became the wife of Fujiwara no Michinaga, laying the foundation for the prosperity of his descendants. The line of his son, Tokinaka, became the Niwada clan, which produced the mothers of Emperors Gohanazono and Gokashiwabara, and the Ayanokoji clan, which was a family of musicians, during the Muromachi period, and the line of Tokinaka's younger brother, Tokikata, became the Itsuji clan, all of which served the Imperial Court. The line of Tokinaka's younger brother, Fuyoshi, lived in Sasaki, Omi, and became the Sasaki clan, and from this came the Rokkaku, Kyogoku, Shioya, and Amago clans, which played an active role as samurai during the Muromachi and Sengoku periods. 宇多天皇の皇子斉世，敦慶，敦固，敦実の4親王の子を祖とする氏族。それぞれ源姓を賜わって臣籍に降り，宇多源氏といわれた。そのうち，敦実親王の子雅信，重信の流れが最も栄えた。なかでも，雅信は左大臣となり，娘倫子を藤原道長の室にするなどして，子孫繁栄の基礎を築いた。その子時仲の流れは，室町時代，後花園，後柏原両天皇の母を出した庭田氏や，音曲の家である綾小路氏となり，時仲の弟時方の流れは五辻氏となり，いずれも朝廷に奉仕した。また，同じく時仲の弟扶義の流れは，近江佐々木に住んで佐々木氏となり，これから，六角，京極，塩冶，尼子の各氏が出て室町，戦国時代，武家として活躍した。 (→源氏 )
