A violinist born in Hungary. He studied under the famous Hungarian violinist Hubai Jené (1858-1937) at the Budapest Conservatory in his hometown, and made his debut as a soloist in Berlin at the age of 13. Since then, in the violin world of the first half of the 20th century, when the subjective performance style of Erman and others was acclaimed, he pursued a performance that got closer to the essence of the work, and his attitude, along with that of pianist Gieseking, has been described as a ``new objectivity.'' He boasts a wide repertoire ranging from JS Bach to the Romantic movement, and also enjoys performing music of his own era. He performed many premieres, and formed close friendships with Bartók, Prokofiev, and Bloch in particular. He became a US citizen in 1951, and lived in Switzerland in his later years.
