1667‐1754 French mathematician. Initially educated mainly in classical literature, he soon showed talent for mathematics, and was influenced by C. Huygens's theory of games of chance, which led him to pursue mathematics, particularly probability theory. After studying mathematics and physics at the Sorbonne, he moved to London in 1688 for religious reasons. He was in a difficult position for a while, but in 1697 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. During this time, his friendship with I. Newton was of great help in his success as a mathematician.
