A semi-subterranean mouse endemic to Japan. A rodent mammal of the Muridae family. Found in the Kanto and Chubu regions of Honshu, it mainly lives in low mountain forests, but can also be seen at around 2,400 meters above sea level on Mount Fuji and the Yatsugatake Mountains. It is about 10 cm long, with a tail of about 4 cm, and a reddish-brown dorsal body and pale orange ventral body. It is similar to the Japanese field vole, which lives in the highlands of Honshu and is also endemic to Japan, but has a shorter tail. Its eyes and ears are small, indicating its adaptation to an underground lifestyle. It digs shallow tunnels on the floor of dark forests and builds nests out of dead leaves and other materials.
