Kiss - Huh

A tubular structure that protrudes from the mouth or its surroundings of an animal. It is also called the proboscis or snout tube. It is found in both invertebrates and vertebrates, but its structure and function differ depending on the animal. Examples of invertebrates include: (1) the pharynx of flatworms, Turbellaria; (2) the long, slender tubular structure that enters and exits from the mouth or the front of the mouth of nemertean animals (usually contained within the proboscis, it protrudes when attacking or feeding); (3) the protruding pharynx of free-living polychaetes, (4) the long, thread-like anterior mouth lobe of annelids, Echinodermata; (5) the anterior end of the body of hemichordates, and (6) the tubular mouthparts used for sucking blood and nectar, and the long, slender mouth end of weevils, etc., in insects. In vertebrates, examples of snouts include (1) the front end of the head of a sawshark and (2) the outer part of an elephant's trunk.
