A pet dog that originated in England. It is the smallest of all spaniels, a descendant of the miniature spaniels that were cherished in the royal courts of Europe during the monarchy era. It was given this name because King Charles II of England was particularly fond of it. It is characterized by large, drooping ears, round eyes that are widely spaced apart, and a very tight muzzle. It was improved by incorporating blood from the Japanese Chin, and is said to have developed into the dog with its current appearance around the end of the 18th century.
