A pet dog that originated in England. It is the smallest of all spaniels, a descendant of the miniature spaniels that were cherished in the royal courts of Europe during the monarchy era. It was given this name because King Charles II of England was particularly fond of it. It is characterized by large, drooping ears, round eyes that are widely spaced apart, and a very tight muzzle. It was improved by incorporating blood from the Japanese Chin, and is said to have developed into the dog with its current appearance around the end of the 18th century. 原産地がイギリスの愛玩犬。王朝時代のヨーロッパ各地の宮廷で愛育されていた小型スパニエルの後裔(こうえい)で,スパニエルの仲間のうちで最も小さい。イギリスのチャールズ2世が特に熱愛したことから,この名称で呼ばれるようになった。耳は大きく垂れ下がり,円い両眼は左右に広く離れ,口吻が著しくつまっているのが特徴である。日本のチン(狆)の血液を取り入れて改良され,18世紀末ころ現在の容姿のイヌが作られたと伝えられる。
