Formerly known as Luluabourg, Luluabourg is a city in the central-southern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is the capital of the Kasai Occidental Province. It is located about 800 km southeast of Kinshasa, on the Lulua River, a tributary of the Kasai River. The town was founded in 1884 as a military garrison, and in 1895 it became the site of resistance by Africans against the Belgians. It is a commercial center near the diamond fields, and is a processing center for cotton, coffee, palm oil, rice, pineapples, etc. In addition to livestock farming, beer brewing and printing are also carried out. There is a museum and a teacher training school. Population: 303,127 (estimated 1991).
