...A type of Nanban confectionery introduced in the late Muromachi period. It is a pronunciation of the Portuguese word alfeloa (sugar confectionery, molasses confectionery), and was also called alheiru, algeru, or alheiru. Its name has appeared in documents since the early Edo period, and its recipe is described in several cookbooks, including the Gorui Nichiyo Ryori Shinansho published in 1689 (Genroku 2).
