1916‐68 Swedish composer. He studied composition and conducting in Stockholm. He joined the avant-garde musicians' "Monday Group" and served as conductor of the chamber orchestra "Filkingen" that developed from that group from 1946 to 1954. Starting from Hindemith's conservative writing style, he was influenced by Bartók and the Second Viennese School, and produced avant-garde works that were firmly anti-romantic, playing a leading role in Swedish musical activity after World War II. His major works include the country's first twelve-tone Symphony No. 3 (1950), the "Compound Eye" (1958), a space opera using electronic sounds, and "Artisonnance" (1966) for tape.
