Swedish composer. He studied composition and conducting in Stockholm. He joined the avant-garde musicians' "Monday Group" and served as conductor of the chamber orchestra "Filkingen" that developed from that group from 1946 to 1954. Starting from Hindemith's conservative writing style, he was influenced by Bartók and the Second Viennese School, and produced avant-garde works that were firmly anti-romantic, playing a leading role in Swedish musical activity after World War II. His major works include the country's first twelve-tone Symphony No. 3 (1950), the "Compound Eye" (1958), a space opera using electronic sounds, and "Artisonnance" (1966) for tape.

スウェーデンの作曲家。ストックホルムで作曲と指揮を学ぶ。前衛的な音楽家の〈月曜グループ〉に参加，1946‐54年そのグループが発展した室内管弦楽団〈フィルキンゲン〉の指揮者となる。ヒンデミットの手堅い書法から出発し，バルトーク，新ウィーン楽派の影響を受けながら，反ロマン主義を貫く前衛的作品を生み出し，第2次大戦後スウェーデンの音楽活動の指導的役割を果たした。主要作品にこの国最初の十二音技法による《交響曲第3番複眼》(1950)，電子音を使った空間オペラ《アニアラ》(1958)，テープのための《アルティソナンス》(1966)などがある。
