French politician. A renowned mathematician and physicist, he made achievements in the fields of differential equations and analytical functions, and contributed to the development of aviation technology through his research into fluid mechanics. He became a member of the Academy of Sciences in 1910. He entered politics the same year, was elected as a member of parliament, and belonged to the moderate socialist Social Republican faction. During World War I, he mobilized scientists to increase military strength, and worked hard to lead the war as Minister of War and then Prime Minister. After the war, he led the left-wing coalition and became Prime Minister again in 1925, concluding the Locarno Treaty (formally signing it after his resignation). After his resignation, he served as Minister of War in the cabinets of Briand, Heriot, and Poincaré.
