Protomyces

Japanese: プロトミケス（英語表記）Protomyces

A genus in the order Protomycetales, class Hemisporangium, of Ascocysts. About 10 species are known. It is closely related to the order Taphrinales. Many species parasitize seed plants, especially Asteraceae. They form swellings in the stems and leaves of plants, causing malformations and sometimes severe discoloration. They form numerous chlamydospores (resting spores) at various points in the hyphae in the tissues of parasitic plants. These spores form layers under the epidermis, and when they germinate, the thick outer wall breaks, exposing the inner membrane in a cylindrical shape, forming an aggregate ascus (sporangium), inside which numerous spores are produced.

子囊菌類の半子囊菌綱，プロトミケス目に含まれる1属。約10種が知られている。タフリナ目と近縁である。種子植物，とくにキク科植物に寄生する種が多い。植物の茎および葉に腫張（しゆちよう）を形成し，奇形を生じ，著しく変色を伴うこともある。寄生植物の組織中の菌糸のところどころに厚膜胞子(休眠胞子)を多数形成する。この胞子は表皮下に層をなしており，発芽すると厚い外壁が破れて内膜が円筒状に突き出て露出し，集合子囊(胞子囊)となり，内部に多数の胞子を生じる。
