...Did this kind of ethnic Christian art already show its unique character when Christianity was recognized as the state religion of Armenia (Armenian Church) in the early 4th century and the construction of official churches began? The oldest examples date back to the 6th century, but the churches at Ereruk and Tekor (now Digor) near Ani are basilica-style and very similar to Syrian church architecture, and have partition walls that reflect the Iranian palace style. Overall, Armenia in the 5th and 6th centuries is considered to have been a preparatory period in which Syrian and Hellenistic elements were adopted and construction methods were studied. The period from the second half of the 6th century to the end of the 7th century was the "first flourishing period" of Armenian architecture, during which many centralized churches were built while the basilica style continued to exist, and there was a wide variety of plans and structures, including circular, trefoil, and quatrefoil, and among these, the combination of square and cruciform is guaranteed to develop in the future as the classical form of Armenian church architecture. ...
