Since its discovery in 1834, it has often been called Bogazköy, but the village from which the site was named is now officially called Bogazkale. German H. Winkler excavated about 10,000 clay tablets in 1906-12, and B. Hrozný and others deciphered them, confirming that the Hittite language belongs to the Indo-European language family.
