(1) Bloomers, plural. Loose pants worn by women when doing sports such as gymnastics, horse riding, and cycling. They were fastened with elastic cords above or below the knee. It also refers to a similar type of underpants for women and children, but smaller. (2) Bloomer clothing. These are loose-fitting Turkish-style trousers for women, gathered around the ankles. They were originally started by an American woman, Mrs. Miller, in 1848, and were popularized by Amelia Jenks Bloomer (1818-1894), hence the name. At the time, the women's liberation movement was underway, and there was a movement to abolish the full-length skirts (ankle or floor-length) and hoop petticoats that were the norm for women's dresses, and to wear short knee-length skirts instead. Bloomers were invented to go with these short skirts. However, it was not initially well received in New York, but when it was shown in London in 1851, it caused a great sensation.
