The capital of Roskilde county in eastern Denmark. It is located in eastern Zealand, about 30 km west of Copenhagen. There are leather tanneries, breweries, and bacon factories. From 1020 to 1416, it was the palace of the Danish kings, and until 1443, it was the capital of Denmark. It was the seat of a bishopric from about 1060, and was an important center of church administration in the country until the Reformation. The Romanesque-Gothic cathedral (12th to 17th centuries) that stands in the center of the city is the mausoleum of Danish kings and queens. It is currently developed as a residential suburb of the capital, Copenhagen. Population: 49,593 (estimated 1991).
