Shinro-tei

Japanese:
Shinro-tei
Year of death: 1819
Year of birth: Unknown. A comic writer from the early late Edo period. Born into a landlord's family in Edo Hisamatsucho (one theory is Motofunacho), he is said to have squandered the family fortune on debauchery and then become an active comic writer alongside a calligraphy teacher at Kawasaki Daishigawara, but little is known about his real life. His real name was Ikari Sadai. He used many pseudonyms, including Hamamachitei and Kantomai. His comic writing activities are evident from 1789 (Kansei 1), initially emerging as a joke writer, and later pioneering new approaches to nakabon-style reading books, while also being active in rakugobon, kokeibon, and yomihon. He stopped writing comics for a while, but began writing gokan and kokeibon again at the end of the Bunka period (around 1818). When the early playwrights withdrew from the stage during the Kansei Reforms, he filled the void, providing many works that showed a basic knowledge of Chinese classics, and playing a role as a bridge to later playwrights. He also experimented with new ideas in the fields of Nakabon-style reading books and humorous books, and can be said to have been a playwright with a unique style. He also wrote serious works such as "Jitsugokyo Doji Kyoshochu." As for the year of his death, it is only known that he drowned after getting drunk in 1819. <References> Tanahashi Masahiro, "Shinro-teiron" ("Kinsei Bungei, Research and Criticism," October 1976 issue)
