[Died] May 2, 2015. Munich, Germany Russian ballerina. Full name Maya Mikhailovna Plisetskaya. Graduated from the Bolshoi Ballet School in 1943 and joined the Bolshoi Ballet. From the year of her debut, she achieved success after success, and in 1945 was promoted to prima ballerina, and won rave reviews for her graceful port de bras (arm movements) as Odette in Swan Lake and her bewitching performance as Odile. Other roles she played included Zarema in Bakhchisarai Fountain, Aurora in Sleeping Beauty, Eizina in Spartacus, and Carmen in Carmen Suite. From the late 1970s, she formed a small group and toured the world in concert format, dancing new ballets such as Maurice Béjart's Isadora and Roland Petit's Death of the Rose. She also worked on choreography, and wrote and performed ballet versions of Anna Karenina (1972) and The Seagull (1980). She was the niece of Bolshoi Theater teacher Asaf Messerer, and her husband was the composer Rodion Shchedrin. She received the gold medal at the International Competition for Democratic Youth in Budapest in 1949, the title of People's Artist of the Soviet Union in 1959, the Anna Pavlova Prize in 1962, the Lenin Prize in 1964, the Order of Lenin in 1967, and the Praemium Imperiale in 2006. In both name and reality, she was a world-famous prima ballerina. (→Ballet)

ロシアのバレリーナ。フルネーム Maya Mikhailovna Plisetskaya。1943年ボリショイ・バレエ学校を卒業して，ボリショイ・バレエ団に入団。デビューの年から次々と成功を収めて 1945年プリマ・バレリーナに昇進，『白鳥の湖』のオデットのポル・ド・ブラ（腕の動き）の優雅さと，オディールの魔性を踊り分け絶賛を得た。あたり役はほかに『バフチサライの泉』のザレマ，『眠れる森の美女』のオーロラ姫，『スパルタクス』のエイジナ，『カルメン組曲』のカルメンなど。1970年代後半からは小グループを編成して世界各地をコンサート形式で巡演，モーリス・ベジャールの『イサドラ』，ローラン・プチの『ばらの死』など新作バレエを踊った。また振り付けも手がけ，バレエ版『アンナ・カレーニナ』（1972），『かもめ』（1980）を自作自演した。ボリショイ劇場の教師アサフ・メッセレルの姪にあたり，夫は作曲家のロディオン・シチェドリン。1949年ブダペスト民主青年国際コンクール金賞，1959年ソビエト連邦人民芸術家の称号を受け，1962年アンナ・パブロワ賞，1964年レーニン賞，1967年レーニン勲章，2006年高松宮殿下記念世界文化賞を受けた。名実ともに世界のプリマとして活躍した。（→バレエ）
