The first general institution of higher education in Moscow, founded in 1687 by Simeon Polotskii (1629-80). Initially, Greek scholars were appointed professors and taught Greek, Latin, Church Slavonic, the liberal arts, and theology. In the 18th century, however, Stefan Yavorsky's reforms introduced modern languages, medicine, physics, philosophy, and other subjects, and Latin came to be emphasized over Greek. The academy educated not only clergymen but also bureaucrats, and played a major role as the first institution of higher education in Russia.
