A French colony in the central-western part of the African continent. Also known as Equatorial Africa. It was formed in 1910 as a union of the colonies of Chad, Oubangishari (→ Central African Republic), Central Congo (→ Republic of the Congo), and Gabon, with the government office located in Brazzaville. After World War I, Cameroon became a French mandate and was integrated with other territories, including currency and transport networks. In 1946, each colony became an overseas territory, and in 1958 it became an autonomous republic, and in 1960 it became an independent country.
