Born: February 24, 1897 in Amsterdam [Died] July 16, 1954. London. Dutch archaeologist. Specialized in Oriental archaeology. Studied Egyptology at the University of Amsterdam and archaeology at the University of London, and obtained a PhD from Leiden University in 1927. From 1925 to 1929, he led excavations in various parts of Egypt at the request of the Egyptian Expedition Society, and from 1929 to 1937, he excavated various ruins in Iraq, mainly in the Diyala River basin, as the head of a research team from the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago. His main works include Studies in Early Pottery of the Near East (2 volumes, 1924-27), Cylinder Seals (39), Kingship and Gods (48), and The Art and Architecture of the Ancient Orient (54).
