This phenomenon is when interplanetary matter revolving around the Sun due to its gravitational force draws a spiral orbit and gradually approaches the Sun due to the influence of the Sun's light pressure. It was pointed out by JH Poynting and H.P. Robertson of the UK. For objects with large masses such as planets, the effect of light pressure can be ignored, but for tiny particles such as interplanetary matter, the strength of light pressure, which is proportional to the cross-sectional area, cannot be ignored in contrast to the gravitational force, which is proportional to the mass. When sunlight hits the orbiting interplanetary matter, depending on the ratio of the orbital speed to the speed of light, the light will hit the interplanetary matter slightly from an oblique angle from the front, just like rain hitting the window of a moving train at an angle.

太陽の引力で公転している惑星間物質が，太陽の光圧の影響で，渦巻状の軌道を描いて，しだいに太陽に近づいていく現象をいう。イギリスのポインティングJ.H.PoyntingとロバートソンH.P.Robertsonによって指摘されたもの。惑星のように質量の大きいものは，光圧の影響が無視できるが，惑星間物質のような微小な粒子では，質量に比例する引力に対して，断面積に比例する光圧の強さが無視できない。公転している惑星間物質に太陽光があたる場合，公転速度と光速度との比によって，ちょうど進行中の列車の窓に雨が斜めにあたるように，惑星間物質にも，わずかながら斜め前方から光があたることになる。
