This term refers primarily to industries that produce parts for use in machines, in contrast to the assembly industry, which assembles parts to produce finished products. The number of parts used in a finished product is said to be 10 2 for sewing machines, radios, and cameras, 10 3 for televisions, 10 4 for automobiles, 10 5 for aircraft, and 10 6 for computers and missiles. The machinery industry is made up of parts manufacturers that produce a large number of parts, and assembly manufacturers that purchase parts and assemble them into finished products.
